Research
I have no idea on how to make an recipe instruction animation, hence before I start I search for some visual reference.
Recipe video reference, Week 5 [5/03/2024] |
Some example includes:
After having a basic idea on the frame structure, I started with a search on After Effects tutorial ☠ I am really not familiar with it... After the tutorial I studied some most important parts like composition, transition and how to connect frames together, as the time is tight I didn't dive into more advance part of it.

Storyboard
I planned out frames in my notebook, so that its easier for me to have an overall idea on what assets to be used, and the time allocation for each frames
In total I have around 12 frames, so each frame will take around 5 seconds
Video background
I decided to extend the visual elements from the posters - blue tone, lemon, Canva font.
Went for Pinterest hunt...
I went for Italian style tiles, and combine it with lemon assets

Editing the layers in Photoshop:
Drafting background, Week 6 [12/03/2024] |
Background is done! Personally I really like this as it gives Italy vibes and suits the personality of the granny, calming blue but the dish brings warmth like yellow!
Finalized background, Week 6 [12/03/2024] |
How I process each frame and scene is I will pre process assets in Photoshop, as I find it is easier and does not burden my laptop too much as After Effects is very heavy... After processing assets I will import it into After Effects and animate them accordingly.
Frame progress, Week 6 [12/03/2024] |
In Photoshop, I make adjustments to images such as brightness, curves, etc...
Assets editing, Week 6 [12/03/2024] |
For some of the assets I have to draw it in Procreate
For each frames after editing, I turn it into pre composition, at the end I have 12 pre composition.finalizing composition, Week 6 [12/03/2024] |
And I find out that towards the end, the aep file gets heavier... And I couldn't continue with my edit and add sound effects as the preview render couldn't go smoothly... :") I have to go to campus library's Mac room to continue @@

💭Feedback💭
- when designing animated infographic, animation is not the focus, its the presentation and flow of the instruction and allow viewer understand easily
- for the potato submerging into the water, masking might not be the best solution. Instead utilize layering effect
✍🏼Reflection✍🏼
I learnt and become more familiar with After Effect animation, this project took so much longer time than project 1 as there are a lot frames. Nonetheless, I learnt that presentation of information focus on the direct and straightforward way and minimal irrelevant element as the attention span of the viewer is limited.
