FLIP 1: Different types of Infographics

Requirement:

Presentation:

Starting off with the first FLIP topic we started with discovering different type of infographics,
Infographics mainly consist of:
  • Statistical Infographics
  • Informational Infographics
  • Timeline Infographics
  • Process Infographics
  • Geographical Infographics
  • Comparison Infographics
  • Hierarchical Infographics
  • List Infographics
  •  Resume Infographics
This exercise allows me to understand infographics can be classified into different categories, depending on the purpose and the message being conveyed.

Individual Task
Next we are also required to work on re-designing an existing poorly constructed infographic poster. The poster I have selected:
In this poster, few problems I have noticed:
  • Wrong choice of graph (bar chat)
  • Ambiguous title
  • Misleading Axes
  • Absence of reference
Hence, my thought process is to recreate this infographic into a simple yet clear way to present the data, the chart I am going to use is donut chart, also I have decided to use a consistent color pallet and simple layout.
First Draft
Next, I find that the radius of chart seems a bit thick, and lack of illustration so that the viewer can engage with the design more.
Final Outcome
Finally, it's done! I don't want to add too much elements as I wanted to make it simple yet clear. Also there attached source reference, so that the viewer can verify the data's credibility.

Tool used: Canva

🟡Difficulty (1/5)
I have already been using Canva for 4 years, hence it is actually my go to designing software! I really appreciate the interface and it makes designing so accessible even before I started my designing minor.
🟡Usefulness (4.5/5)
As being said, Canva provides literally everything you need as a beginner designer/casual user. It even provides more and more feature, integrating AI. But maybe a downside of it is that it doesn't provide more versatile advanced tools during the process I find that I couldn't edit the thickness of my donut chart.
🟡Design templates(4/5)
There are a lot of decent templates to choose from for different infographics too! But one downside is it is hard to import or export the PowerPoint or poster to other editing software

FLIP 2: Saul Wurman's LATCH Theory

Requirement:
Presentation:
For this task, I learnt different element and principle that constitute a well structured infographic. The principles guided me to complete my second class exercise too!

FLIP 3: Miller's Law (Chunking)

Requirement:

Presentation:
I find this chunking rule is applicable and so many different areas in our lives, and I find it especially prevalent in web UX designing.

FLIP 4: Manuel Lima's 9 Directives Manifesto

Requirement:

Presentation
Lastly, in this task I understand more on the principles or general rules to follow when designing infographics.

Learnings and Reflection

I volunteered to present during classes while my groupmates searched for the contents and information. Overall, Mr. Shamsul gave a positive feedback on our group's performance. I am glad that all groupmates are cooperative and finish their task accordingly. Before every presentation, I will look through and prepare for the presentation and draft out what I am going to say, this is to ensure I present a good flow and not stutter.

Overall, I learnt the important topics when it comes to information design, it takes conscious consideration and effort to design infographics that deliver clear message but are visually pleasing too.
